Find me. One day. You will come. Always. For love sake. One day to be loved.
A huge yawn left his lips as he tried to focus on the teacher before him and his fellow students. It had been a long day, he had barely gotten any sleep last night after the huge kishin fight he and Maka had the night before, but he couldn't understand why he was so exhausted and couldn't sleep. All during class, the demon weapon was fighting sleep off, though he could feel himself slowly drifting off at every opportunity. And of course, Prof. Stein was unusually boring today, like he was taunting him and making it even more difficult for him to stay awake.
He could feel Maka peering over at him every so often. His guess was that the meister was checking to make sure he was still awake; no doubt she would wake him up if he actually did give in. Time was slowly going by, of course it was. Wasn't it funny that every time that you wanted class to end, time seemed to go even slower? That kind of stuff just pissed the scythe off. He groaned as he rested his head on his folded arms. "I'm not sure how much longer I can hold myself up." Soul said quietly, but just loud enough for Maka to hear. She always knew just what to tell him to give him the strength to do whatever he needed to do.
The clock was slowly ticking bye and the more it moved, the more his eyes seemed to fall. Slowly, he gave in and fell into a sleep that he wasn't really prepared for. Why the hell could he not sleep during the night, but as soon as he gets to class he conks out. His eyes slowly shut as the sleepiness finally took over him. Maybe no one would notice and he could actually catch up on the sleep he had been losing lately.
His dreams had become getting more and more intense lately, maybe it was because of all the crazy things that had been going on. All he could dream about is hurting Maka. He had been tormented by the thought of not protecting her and her getting hurt for a couple of days now, at least since last week when he needed to transform and couldn't. It didn't happen all the time, but it had been happening a little more frequently. So much so, that Soul had told Maka to keep another weapon on hand, one that wouldn't disappoint her if he did. He had started to become useless and he had secretly become so hard on himself because of it.
His job as a weapon was to protect his meister, how could he do that if he had become this useless to her over time? Could she possibly start to hate him and not want him anymore if this were to continue? All he could see in his dream were the same dreams he had been having over the past week and honestly he had begun to get really tired of them.

MAKA HAD TO ADMIT, this class was awfully boring. They were mostly talking about Kishin formation, which Maka had already pretty much mastered, but it was in her nature to be attentive and stay alert. Every bit of information had to be important, otherwise they wouldn't be teaching it, right? That was how Maka looked at it. That was how people got the top score on Exams, after all.
She looked over at Soul, noticing that he was drifting to sleep every few seconds. Maka had to admit, it was as if Professor Stein was being especially repetitive in his lessons just to give Soul cause to fall asleep. But it was up to Maka to keep him awake. Every few minutes, she'd lightly tap his arm if he seemed to be drifting off. She looked at him every few seconds, to make sure before nudging him. "I'm not sure how much longer I can hold myself up"
It was quiet, only so loud that Maka could hear it, but she couldn't just talk out in class. She quickly took her notebook, and scribbled down some writing. "Don't worry Soul! Class is almost over, and besides, he must be teaching us this for a reason! We can go do something fun for lunch." She slid it across the table, to his seat next to hers, hoping he would read the note.
Sometimes, Soul was acting very strange in his sleep. He was groaning, and often it kept Maka awake through the night. She went in his room to check on him nearly every night, and he seemed to be rolling around, as if something was wrong. She tried to wake him up when he seemed terrified and shaking, but it never worked. The groans only ended in the morning, leaving Maka with a minimal amount of sleep every night. This eventually resulted in Maka having to go to sleep earlier, in order to get some sleep.
But she never said anything, no indication that it bothered her. Despite Soul's sometimes obnoxious behavior, he was still his weapon. But more importantly, he was still human. Everyone had something, and maybe these nightmares were Soul's. As a meister, Maka felt responsible for being there for Soul, through his hardest times.

His awkward forced sleep was interrupted by the sound of the bell. He had finally found a position that would keep him comfortable, of course the bell would ring. His face felt heavy as he pulled himself up. He sleepily looked up at Prof. Stein who had been glaring at him with a funny look for who knows how long. Soul fell back a little bit at the sight of the creepy professor staring at him. How long had he been looking at him like that? Did he know that he had fallen asleep?
The demon scythe quickly turned his gaze to his meister, hoping that Prof. Stein would completely forget about seeing him as soon as he gave in to the sleepiness in his mind. Soul quickly got his books together and slung his backpack over his shoulder and stood up completely facing Maka. "So, where to next?"
The scythe began walking without even waiting to hear the answer. He brushed by her and walked down the stairs of the rows of desks and started out the door. He needed to forget about his natural urges to sleep and focus more on his meister and what he needed to do for her. She was counting on him and he had to pull through for her. It was stupid for him to look so down and tired, it was just going to hold Maka back and he definitely didn't want to hold her back.
Soul looked back at her from the corner of his eye to see the expression on her face. Was she disappointed in him? Was she nervous? Did she hate him because he couldn't transform perfectly every time? He needed to believe in himself more, but he was struggling. He couldn't let Maka know he was struggling so hard with this, she needed to realize how he could pull through and that he wasn't weak. That's how Soul was, projecting how strong and cool he was to everyone even if that wasn't how he felt.
A sigh escaped his lips as he placed his hands behind his head and leaned back in his usual walking stance. "Whatever we do, we need to be cool about it. We've been slacking a little bit, maybe a kishin fight?" Though that wasn't really what he wanted, what if he screwed up again. He was sure that she resented him for the failures he had been experiencing the past couple of days. He was so useless... | [atrb=style, background: #ffffff; color: ccbdcf; font-family: Georgia; padding: 0px 5px]WORDS ● here TAGGED ● here NOTES ● here TEMPLATE ● jawn of AA, OTE, DMB and TC |

SHE SMILED WITH RELIEF as the final bell for class rang. True, she loved class, but she couldn't help feeling relieved that Soul no longer had to struggle through the intensely repetitive class. The school day was over, for now, which did somewhat make Maka feel disappointed. But, it was also good, because they did need to be out fighting Kishin. They were so close to making Soul a Death Scythe, and they couldn't screw it up!
She was thirsty though, and somewhat hungry. Soul had asked her what to do next, and suggested they go fight a Kishin. Maka didn't want to screw up, and messups were easier on an empty stomach. She could tell Soul was a bit... disgruntled by the previous events in which they had both been complete failures. He stood up, brushing by Maka, and making his way down the steps to the door. Maka stood up, flattened her skirt and quickly rushed after him.
"Wait for me Soul!" she called after him, finally catching up. Soul looked tired, almost nervous about messing up again. Maybe now wasn't the best time to fight a Kishin, but she could tell he wanted to, for her. Maybe if they went to recuperate first, then Soul wouldn't feel so down, and they wouldn't have the same defects as the last few attempts. She didn't want to mess their chances up, with tired scythes and hungry meisters.
"Maybe we should go get a coffee and some snacks at Deathbucks first. You seem kind of tired, and I'm pretty hungry. It might be good to replenish our energy before we do anything drastic." It was true, that Maka was hungry. No matter how desperately she wanted to fight the Kishin Egg now, they needed to be ready to do it. Screwing this one up wasn't an option. Not this time.
She grabbed Soul's wrist and started running down the steps of Shibusen, Soul in tow. She made it to the bottom, then sat down on a nearby bench. "Unless you're ready now? I'm not sure if I am, but if you think we should go fight first, then go ahead." She could feel her hunger in the pit of her stomach, but it wasn't so intense that it was bugging her to no ends. She could fight a Kishin, if Soul was ready. At this point, it was more important that Soul was ready to fight than being hungry. With the recent mess-ups both of them had experienced, if Soul could transform, she'd rather go for it now than waiting and having Soul's transformation not work again.

Ouch. Did she just lose faith in him? She would rather go out to eat first to get his strength up? Did he not look like he was up for it and ready to go? At that thought, he felt her warm hand grab his wrist and drag him outside the school. He wasn't really sure what was going on and why she just drug him all the way there. He would have willingly walked with her to this bench, was dragging really necessary? None the less, he did sit down and a sigh escaped his lips.
This problem was going to follow him forever, he just knew it. He felt so completely useless and like she had no faith in him at all. What was he going to do? He really needed to talk to Prof. Stein about all this. Maybe there was some drug he could give him to make all this stop happening. "Nah, eating sounds good right about now." He wouldn't deny he was hungry. His stomach had been quietly growling at him all during class, he was just more concentrated on sleep to care. Now his mind was more concerned about his recent failures. He had failed his meister.
Soul stretched as he stood up and began to make his way towards Deathbucks without even hearing Maka's response. This place wasn't his favorite place in the world to be, but he would tolerate it. He knew she loved it. His eyes raised towards the sky and watched as the birds flew. Would this continue on forever?
He needed to snap out of this depression he had sunken into. He was going to make Maka uncomfortable and suspicious and if Maka knew that he was upset about all this, she would just start acting all weird and try to cheer him up. That was definitely not what he wanted. He closed his eyes for a minute and hoped that he could gather enough willingness to put on a front for his meister. She didn't need to know how much this was actually bothering him.
"What are you hungry for?" He needed something to distract himself and maybe food was just the thing he needed. He already knew the answer to the question he asked, it was always the same. Maka was kind of dull that way, but he didn't mind it.

MAKA FELT SO WEAK IN THAT MOMENT, when Soul's face looked so hurt. She hadn't meant to say that she had no faith in him, as she had made a fair amount of mistakes. It wasn't his fault, but she couldn't help feeling bad when he seemed so crestfallen after her last words. She was hungry, and Maka had honestly thought food might have been an aid, but Soul had clearly taken it another way.
"I-I didn't mean anything by it Soul.... I thought maybe... food could be an aid." The Meister had to hold back tears. She had tried everything to be as strong as Soul, even risking their ability to resonate together, and he thinks that she doesn't have faith in him! Maka didn't know if she was hungry, or angry or sad.... she couldn't even tell. When Soul stood up and started walking away without her... that was just too much.
"Soul! She could feel her eyes filling, but she bit back the tears, forcing herself not to cry. "You need to stop hiding everything! If you have a problem, I'm here for you! You don't even trust me. You were willing to talk to a Witch last time, and that didn't end well enough! If you can't trust me, why am I your meister?! I'm here for more reasons just to control you as a weapon Soul." She strode past him, running forward at least a block, until she slowed to a walk. She couldn't bear to be near him when he was moping. Sure, he acted like he was fine, but he should be able to tell her if something was wrong.
She stopped dead in her tracks in front of Deathbucks Café. "There are other reasons we were paired together Soul. I'm not mad at you. I tried as hard as I could to become stronger for you. As a Meister, I deserve a chance to protect you. You just have to let me Soul." She was feeling slightly better, but all she wanted was for Soul to be able to talk to her. They were partners! Soul would rather trust Professor Stein than her, when maybe all Soul needed was to regain his confidence. That wouldn't come as easily from Professor Stein as it would from her.
She pushed open the door wide enough that it would stay open by the time Soul got to it. She strode up to the counter, ordering two coffees for her and Soul. She got herself a muffin, and chose Soul's favorite snack. She took the bags containing their respective snacks, and set them down. By this time, the coffee was ready, and so she took it back to the corner where she had chosen their seat. She needed to be alone with Soul right now. She sat down, and waited for Soul to sit down. "We need to talk.... You need to be able to trust me, Soul..."

What was he going to do? Was it that obvious that he was so troubled by all this. The demon scythe kept quiet as he just followed Maka. It really was ridiculous that he could talk to Prof. Stein about all this and couldn't even talk to his own meister, but was that wrong? He knew that she would just be upset if he told her how much he was struggling and actually knew how he was feeling about all this and towards her. He had obviously hurt her enough all ready.
When they finally got inside Deathbucks, Soul sat at one of the nearby booths. Resting his head on his hand and staring out the window, he realized just how much he was letting this consume him. Maka was worried about him and it was obvious by how much she was freaking out.
Maka came by and sat down in front of him and he immediately grabbed his food and began eating it. He really wasn't ready to talk about it though, especially not to someone he knew he was hurting directly. He was her weapon. He was supposed to protect her and be ready to give his life for her, how could he do any of that if he couldn't even transform? That was all that he was good for! Now that his ability is gone, what was he supposed to do?
Soul chewed a few times and then gave a big swallow as he looked down at the table. "Maka....you really don't need to worry about anything. I'm just...trying to find a deal with all this right now. You know what happened, you were standing right there...I'm just...useless..." His eyes shifted back out the window. It was going to start getting dark soon, they needed to get home beforehand. It was just going to get dangerous and with a weapon who couldn't transform, they were screwed.
"Just don't worry about it alright? Things will work out." He hoped that that was true, but he really wasn't so sure.

You know that isn't true!" She spoke without even thinking, in a rush to stop Soul from speaking. "It isn't your fault Soul. I've been failing too! The Kishin's madness isn't something you can control." She hated it when Soul got like this. She'd do whatever it took to protect him, even if it meant taking a slice to the chest like he did. He said he was prepared to die for her, so she was ready to do the same for him! Her eyes flickered to her food, which she started to eat, as her growling stomach called for it.
She took slow sips of coffee, staring into Soul's eyes. She couldn't fail him. She wasn't ready to lose again. They were so close. They only need a Kishin Egg Soul until they could prepare to fight a Witch! She knew that there was a high probability that they would fail, but accepting the fact that they could screw up again was basically digging their own grave. She wouldn't accept defea--!!
Her eyes lifted sharply from her food, looking out the door to the left. She sensed something, two souls. The vision was fuzzy, because of the overlying madness wavelength, and she couldn't make out what kind of souls they were. That's when one of the souls vanished. "Soul! I think there's a Kishin Egg out there! There were two souls.... and one of them. It just disappeared. " She grabbed Soul by the arm and pulled him out of his chair, but let go when he was standing up. "We need to hurry!"
She pushed open the door to the Café and sprinted out, turning a corner to an alleyway, where there stood a mumbling little boy in the corner. "B-but... it's just a little boy?" She muttered to herself. The boy turned around, but his face was hideous and old, as if it was an adult trapped within a child's body. He was still muttering as if he were insane, and began inching his way toward her. "S-Soul!" She called out for her partner to transform, until the thing grabbed her wrist.
She lifted her foot, kicking it firmly in the stomach, shooting it back across into the wall. It seemed as though the boy-thing was giving off some kind of goop, as her arm was now dripping with some sort of green substance. She tried to shake it off, and most of it fell to the ground, however some of it remained. Suddenly, Maka felt a sharp pain in her arm, the same place where the thing had grabbed her. The green goop faded, leaving behind several cuts. "W-what? What's going on?! Soul!!" |

This was getting more and more difficult. He knew that she was going to start feeling bad the more that he showed how much this was affecting him. He lifted his hand and scratched the back of his head nervously. A sigh escaped his lips. "There really isn't anything for you to worry about..."
Everything stopped when Maka sensed the souls. He felt her grab his hand and pull him out the door. He wasn't completely sure what was going on, but he knew he had to concentrate if he wanted to transform or at least try to...He couldn't fail Maka again. He wouldn't let that happen. He wasn't even completely paying attention to everything that was going on. When Maka made the gesture for him to transform, he was concentrating solely on that. He was going to do his best for her, because she was always doing her best for him.
Soul closed his eyes and took a deep breath. 'Alright Soul, you have to do this. Do this for Maka.' He seemed like he was trying really hard, but...nothing happened. He tried harder. Nothing. 'Come on, Soul!' He pushed. Pushing harder than he ever had before. He had never wanted to transform more than he did at this moment. He wasn't ready for failure again. Not this time!
Success! Soul's form changed and he flew up into the air and transformed into a scythe. "Yes! I did it! I transformed into a scythe!" In his scythe form, he flipped around a couple of times and went straight for Maka.

His transformation was a success! She reached her hand up, grabbing Soul and spinning him in her hands, then slicing downward. "Your soul is mine!" The Scythe Meister shouted, and sprung into the air, flipping over and coming down on the Kishin with an immense slice, which seemed to scrape its stomach.
It ran at Maka, throwing goop-covered punches, and she pushed her head to the side each time, continually dodging his attacks until she had Soul into position. She set it up so he was curved, the blade pointing up and the butt of the scythe close to the ground. "Letter-U Hunter!" She swung the scythe upward, throwing the Egg into the air. She started screaming triumphantly and she flipped the scythe upright, the point point at the ground now, rather than the air.
She swung down, smashing the Kishin through the heart and pinning his body to the ground. She waited until the energy absorbed into a central point, right where the final blow was struck, and it formed into the squishy red floating soul that was a Kishin Egg. "Eat up Soul. Number 99." All that was left was the witch. It was almost time for Soul to become a Death Scythe. Perhaps with any newfound powers he gained, it would be enough to overcome whatever seemed to be eating at Soul, the madness wavelength nulling out his transformation.
Hopefully was the key word here. Soul needed to be able to trasform for their final battle. What happened during the final moments of the battle with the witch would determine the path the duo would embark on. With Maka's empowered Soul Perception, they should have no difficultly locating a real witch. That is of course, if it worked. |

This was what he was meant to be, a powerful weapon that can be used to defeat Kishins. This was his purpose in life and with being unable to transform, it was really hard on him. Soul could feel himself being pulled back however, the madness was coming back, he could feel it. 'What?' This wasn't good. Asura was dead, why is this happening all of a sudden out of nowhere?
Soul took a deep breath and concentrated on what he was doing. He wouldn't let him be taken over by the madness, not again. Could the madness have something to do with him not being able to transform? There was a very good possibility. Professor Stein and him were going to have to have a talk about all this. The demon scythe was sure that he would have something to say about all of this. In a matter of minutes, Maka had defeated the Kishin and the soul floated down within arms reach. He wasn't going to lie, he was a little nervous to transform back into his human form. What if he wasn't able to ever turn into a scythe? It had taken him forever to change just now, what if he didn't have the ability to next time during the witch fight.
He took a deep breath as he slowly turned into his human form and strolled over to the floating Kishin soul. With his normal cool swipe, he took the soul in his hand and looked at it with a strange expression. This was it. They were at 99 again, but this time it would be different. He would become a death scythe and he would protect Maka. He tightened his grip on the soul before placing it neatly in his mouth. With a loud gulp, the soul was gone. The scythe closed his eyes, now all they needed was a witch.
Stress seemed to completely overflow him as he realized he was going to have to transform again. Were they ready to fight a witch at this current state? If he wasn't able to transform they could possibly die at the hands of a witch. Was he really ready to risk everything just to become a death scythe. What was he going to do? He didn't want to risk both his and Maka's safety just on his ability to transform.
He was so useless, he couldn't even protect his meister fully. Who knew which time he would be able to transform and which time he wouldn't. Soul turned to Maka and looked at her. "Well, I guess the witch soul is the only one left." He had said something similar once before, but that time he was more excited about it. Now, he felt kind of...scared. He didn't feel he was ready for this...

Blair wasn't even a witch and they could barely beat her, even with Soul transforming correctly. "Are you ready for this Soul?"
Maka was sure that if the two of them could get going, and Soul transformed properly, that they could beat this Witch with a simple Genie Hunter or Witch Hunter. Maka felt confident at this point, and as long as nothing went wrong, she and Soul would be stronger than ever before. Wasn't that what was important? Becoming stronger as a team, and working together to defeat evil. All of this had been for the sake of being the strongest team of students at the DWMA, hadn't it? If they failed again... Maka would be reduced to a pure nothing again. Her perfect score would no longer matter, and she'd end up taking the test again and getting another pair of panties. Who was to say Ox wouldn't beat her next time?
"We can do this Soul. We won't fail again" She nodded, but then felt something strong, a powerful Soul just outside the city, in the forests. A witch Soul. "Let's go." She grabbed Soul's arm and started running towards the forest. She could feel the soul getting more defined and powerful the closer they got, until they were face-to-face with a witch. The witch looked right at them, and smirked. "What have we got here, a sad little team from the Academy?" The witch laughed.
"Your soul is mine!" Maka raised her hand and waited for the scythe to plunk into her palm. But, it didn't. Maka turned and gave Soul a look, a mix of despair, fright and a tiny bit of anger. Soul wasn't transforming now, in their most important battle! But Maka had let herself get distracted, and felt a claw run down her back. She screamed in pain and dropped to her knees, now fuming with anger.
The witch stood behind her, with a wolf snout and paws. Her mouth opened, as if coming in to take a bite out of Maka. She was a delicious little girl, after all! Maka rolled to the side as the snout rammed into the ground, and she jumped onto the back of the witch and dug her head into the ground. She looked hopefully at Soul, hoping to see his arm as the blade of a scythe, ready to drive into the witch's head.
But it didn't happen. The witch pulled her head out of the ground, in the process throwing Maka back, who slammed into a tree. She staggered up, blood running down her back and seeping through her trench coat/cloak. "Your soul... is mine!" |
