It wasn't as though she stepped in here all that often as of late, but having come in and taken a seat, she could remember why she used to come here on a regular basis, back when she didn't have a demanding- but certainly more fulfilling than her last- job. The smell of coffee was strong in the air, but not utterly overpowering. To balance it out was the scent of freshly-baked sweets of some sort. Cookies, if she could remember right. The girls who worked alongside her at her old job always said they were fattening, and not to eat them.
Being free of that life and those people, though, maybe she would take a chance and try one or two. What was the harm in that?
But she wasn't just here to try sweets in a rebellious fashion. And for once, she wasn't just here to people-watch, either. As she took a spot in the (luckily short) line to get her coffee, listening to the calm piano music that lightly danced around the store, she recalled the phone call she'd had earlier. She was going to meet someone here; another teacher whom she'd just met today. From what she could tell, he was...eccentric, but there was something laying beneath that. She was nearly as curious to see what that was as he was to know more about her, it seemed. Really, he didn't just want to know about her so much as everything- an endless hunger for knowledge of all sorts.
A few months ago, she would have hidden as far away as she could manage from someone like that. Time had passed between now and then, though, obviously. The sort of things he'd asked about so far were still painful to talk or even think about, but she figured that it wasn't good for her to keep them bottled inside like that. He agreed with her. What harm could a little talking do? Maybe he'd even open up some, this time. That would be nice, and certainly very interesting. If he were as hellbent on being her partner as he seemed, she'd like to know some more about him.
In due time! Finally, the last person in front of her went on their way with their coffee. She stepped up to the counter smiling. “Hi! Can I have a vanilla bean frappichino, please?” The young man, a few years younger than she by the look of him, seemed more than happy to oblige. With little more than a call to one of his fellows, her frappichino was being created. He gave her the total and she fished into her pocket for the right amount of money and promptly put it into his hand. He put it into the cash register, which spat out a receipt. In a movement that betrayed how long he had probably been doing this, he tore it away from the machine and held it out to her just as her order hit the counter. She grinned and took both, pocketing one and taking a sip from the other. Delicious.
“Thank you very much!” she said to him as she turned away and he gave her a practiced response of some sort; she couldn't quite make it out, between a familiar song coming on and the door opening for a couple that came walking in. Quickly, she moved out of their way and took a seat at a small table next to one of the wide windows.
As she took another sip of her purchase, she reflected on how nice the sky looked right now. The sun was beginning to go down, and it had painted the world out there in shades of orange. Some of the light filtered in through the windows, sharing the colour with the inside of the establishment and its current inhabitants.
She hoped that Do- Stein would show up before it got too late. And hopefully, she wasn't troubling him too much by asking him to come here.

[/b] It was, to say the least, not something Stein was used to taking time out of his day for. However, despite the frivolity of such an encounter was much more like an investment in their possible future partnership, rather than a petty social encounter. The streets of Death City were never Stein’s favorite, as they seemed to always be littered with feeble teenage minds. All they ever seemed to do was sit around exchanging flippant remarks or exercising crass language, and not to forget the various other illicit activities the juveniles felt the urge to spend their time participating in. The terrible affliction of ignorance youth appeared to be riddled with was more than just an outbreak; it was a genetic disease. It would seem to Stein that, more often than not, the disease would transcend generation after generation without cease, as the children Stein was educated with seemed to trifle through life in the same way. This was always a cause for frustration. Stein, being a man of science, albeit mad science, was familiar with the axioms nature provided, and understood quite well the laws of physics, but the idea that one individual had a divine right to separate and judge right from wrong, was a concept that had to be drilled into his brain. And even now in the present day, Stein found himself actively suppressing a burgeoning desire to rebel and to break loose from the chain of law.The fact that youth simply submitted tore him to pieces. A group of adolescents, no older than Stein’s own students, were walking Stein’s way. They laughed obnoxiously, each child a wild look in their eye, and a lust for nothing more than to show off and cause trouble. Feeling rather infuriated by the posse’s boisterous antics, his soul swelled with contempt. The kids must have felt it, or experienced it in some way or another, as their expressions of joy dissolved, a chilling sensation sweeping over them. “Little bastards,” he mumbled to himself. Letting his impatience get the better of him, he slung the door of the coffee shop open, knocking over a chair. Luckily the overwhelming sense of tranquility seemed to absorb and overcome the abrupt entrance. Picking up the chair, he proceeded to scan for Momoko, and finding her in a quiet corner of the shop, he gave a friendly wave. He eagerly approached and sat down across from her, not bothering to order coffee, or even consider the option. “I must admit, I was very excited to hear you call.”[/size][/ul] [/blockquote][/blockquote]

For some minutes, Momo had been sitting at the table, sipping away at her frappachino. She had been enjoying the music and casually watching the people as they came in and left in a somewhat steady stream. Apparently, she'd wound up people watching, anyway. There wasn't much else to do right now, anyway.
All this time, she'd been enjoying the peaceful atmosphere, when suddenly the door to the shop slammed open. She nearly jumped, but managed to keep her cool. Her brow quirked as she pondered upon who it was, but she didn't have to wait long: a man in a white lab coat stepped inside and picked up the chair that he'd knocked over when he swung the door. A smile spread over her lips as she recognized who it was- something that only took a few moments, based on his slightly strange appearance. It would be hard to mistake that screw in his head, anyway.
Curiously, she watched as he scanned the room, and in mere moments, he'd acknowledged her with a wave (which she'd returned in kind) and came over. “Oh, good! I was afraid I was bothering you. It's been a while since I've gone out with another teacher, so I'm always worried about disturbing them in the middle of something.” Her smile turned sheepish at her little confession. At her last job, she would know who would be busy that night based on the dry-erase board in the back rooms alone; there was no guesswork. The real issue was whether or not they had something else to do, or if they even felt like going out that night. Some of the girls worked really hard, after all, so it was no wonder they were sometimes so exhausted.
“That was...quite an entrance you made,” she ventured on, expression becoming slightly concerned, “is there something wrong? Or do you just have something against coffee shop doors?”

[/b] he began "I was actually hoping to hear from you, after pestering you I began to worry that I had driven you away completely." His smile turned into a bashful grin, subsiding when she inquired about his mood. "Hm? No, nothing at all," he responded. He giggled slightly. The truth was, little fits of anger and frustration were not unusual for Stein, in fact it was likely to happen at least a few times a week. Being an oddball, he had just simply gotten used to the disappointment that bubbled up from within. It was to be expected, and was just part of life. Considering his insanity, Stein began to realize that Momoko could prove to be a relatively effective anchor to reality. Momoko seemed to be of a similar, more docile disposition in the same way that Marie, and God knew what help Marie was in keeping Stein grounded. Stein stared at Momoko briefly debating looking into her soul again. Something about this woman couldn't bring himself to continue doing it. The more he spoke to her, the less subjective she became, the less like an experiment. She could become his partner in Spirit's absence. Would Stein rather just read her, ram his wavelength inside of her, and adjust his accordingly, or should blend with her naturally, like most would have to? It wasn't a matter of science, as either was was effective, but rather an endeavor in morality. Averting his eyes, he glanced out the window. Golden light licked the rooftops of Death City. Returning his gaze to her, he began to speak. "Before we explore matters of partnership, I must confess that I am currently paired with Spirit Albarn, on Shinigami-sama's orders. He has however allowed me to take a second partner in his absence," his a morbid monotone, eyes unblinking. "Hopefully this doesn't turn you off," Stein said, his voice shifting to alarmingly joyful splendor. "Anyway, tell me about yourself. Just who are you, Momoko Kyoji?" his eyes narrowed, as his voice once again dropped. A focused gaze could be seen through the Stein's glasses as they gave of a mysteriously harsh glint.[/size][/ul] [/blockquote][/blockquote]

”Oh, really?” was her initial response. She seemed...pleased, and a little bit surprised, too. Someone was hoping to hear from her, and they were actually concerned about whether or not they had bothered her, for a change. It was nice, she had to admit. “Well, I guess this proves that you hadn't!”
She gave a little bob of her head, as if in understanding. “That's good, then.” Honestly speaking, she was a little more confused now. If he weren't in a bad mood or anything- something that was further shown by the strangely cute giggle he made (she hadn't heard a guy giggle in a while)- then why had he slammed the door? She didn't understand, but maybe it was best to just move on. Ultimately, that was just what she did, as apparently he did, too.
He spent a moment or two looking at her, when quite suddenly he mentioned already having a partner. Her brow quirked a little, her smile faltering for a moment. He had another partner? Was she really just a temporary replacement?
What if he was just lonely, though? She supposed she would have been lonely, too, if Chris had gone on some extended leave back when they were partners. Maybe she was taken off-guard, is all. She certainly hadn't expected that. Besides, what harm could it do? Maybe their wavelengths wouldn't even match. The momentary feeling of offense and the resulting expression faded away. Another smile came across her face. It was worth a shot, if nothing else! “No, I guess not.”
Then he asked her to tell him about herself. Nice way to start a conversation, but she wasn't sure of how to start on that topic. “What are you looking to know, exactly? I'm not really sure where to start or what to talk about.”

[/b] Stein was shocked as he realized just how calm and cool he managed to sound. This was always the case, as the man had conditioned himself to speak in such a way, even in dire circumstances. “Pitiful,” the scientist thought to himself. “Who would ever know that I would have this much trouble speaking to a human, something I claim to understand so well.” It was enough to frustrate Stein quite a bit. Something was unusually unsettling about her, as though she expected him to be only the best if he wanted to be her partner. Stein usually considered himself to be the best, but he could tell that she was beginning to see him as who he truly was, still just a curious child wearing a facade of grandeur and might, a selfish child, still frustrated by the world, his confidence wavered.
